SUICIDOLOGY 101:
In this powerful presentation based on her book, How To Tell if Your College (High School) Friends are Suicidal, and What To Do About It , Christy says "We don't talk about it, but it happens anyway. Suicide rates among youth (ages 15-24) have increased 200% in the last fifty years. Perhaps the biggest problem is the taboo associated with suicide." Break the wall of silence at your school with Christy Whitman as she teaches:
  • Tips, Facts, Signs and Symptoms of Suicide
  • How to stop a suicide-what to look for, and what to do-if you are concerned about someone.
  • Coping skills necessary to meet difficult challenges, and how to adapt to change.
WHY AM I SO SAD?:  In this dynamic keynote presentation, Christy gets right to the point about depression, and what to do to move through it. "Ten percent of college students have been diagnosed with depression. The vast majority of young adults, aged 18 and older who are diagnosed with depression do not receive appropriate or even any treatment at all".   Suicides associated with major depressive disorder tend to occur early in the course of the illness, especially in younger people. Christy Whitman will help students through depression by teaching:
  • The truth about anti-depressants.
  • How to transition from where you are to where you want to be.
  • How to develop tools necessary to meet challenges and adapt to change.
  • How to become personally empowered.

THIS IS YOUR BRAIN ON DRUGS:  In this eye-opening program on alcohol and drug awareness, Christy draws from her personal experience of losing her sister to suicide, and directly correlates the loss with the use of drugs. Christy delivers this message as an expert in the pharmaceutical industry, as well as sharing personal stories and experiences. Christy paints the picture of what the consequences may be when a person chooses drugs and alcohol. The students will learn:
  • What effect drugs and alcohol has on the brain.
  • Understanding addiction, dependence, and tolerance.
  • The reality of jail, suicide, depression, and death.
  • Self-empowerment and responsibility.

Here is what other advisors and students have said about Christy’s presentations:

“The Office of Student Involvement and The Student Development Center co-sponsored a lecture by Christy Whitman on Depression and Suicide with great results. We had over four classes attend each session, and the evaluations were most impressive. Our students learned the many signs of depression and suicide and what to do in case they encountered the signs. Faculty that attended were also impressed by the information provided, and was thankful to our offices for bringing the very important topic to campus. As the Director of Student Involvement, I would highly recommend bringing Christy onto campus, as her presentation can most definitely save a life.” Debra Balestra, Director, Student Involvement, SUNY Rockland Community College.

“I want to thank you again for your outstanding presentation to the Hillsborough Community College group on November 15, 2007. Almost two months later, I have students telling me how much they learned from your presentation on suicide. Your willingness to share your story was and continues to be an inspiration. I and others appreciate your outstanding effort in educating people to the warning signs and all the other ramifications of suicide. I have been in the activities field for over 24-years and I truly feel that your presentation is one of the most important messages that we need to present to our students.” Kenneth Turley, Student Activities Advisor, Hillsborough Community Campus, Dale Mabry Campus.

"It was a pleasure having Christy Whitman speak at our university. Christy did a great job of getting her message across to our students. She had a very dynamic power point presentation. Her books are great resources for anyone to use in dealing with this difficult issue." Mark Stone, Director of Student Activities and Orientation, Central Methodist University.

“Great program on a difficult subject.” Kelly Warren, Student Activities Advisor, FCCJ-Kent Campus

“Christy’s presentation was great!” Kipp Colvin, Student Activities Director, Glenville State College.

“Dear Christy, thank you so much for presenting your talk on suicide to our students today. From the start you established a rapport with the group that was genuine. By relating your own personal story, students became far more willing to open up and ask questions. The information you shared was extremely  important and hopefully will “arm” students with tools they can use if they ever have to deal with this situation in the future. Much luck to you in all your endeavors.” Carol Gladstone, FCCJ-Deerwood Student Learning Specialist

“Very interesting lecture. Great speaker!”  Steven Gunter, Student Activities, FCCJ-North Campus,

“You helped me realize that I needed to pay more attention to the signs that students as well as adults give off when problems start. You put me in touch with the emotional side that is sometimes lost.” Anzell N. Harrell, Director of Unions and Student Life, Elizabeth City State University

“Christy’s presentation on suicide prevention was powerful and eye opening.”  Jason Meadows, Director of Student Activities, Olivet College

Students

“After my dad died my life starting going down hill. Everything seemed to be going wrong. I started thinking thoughts of hurting myself. Because my friends, family and co-workers helped me, my life is definitely looking up. It is so important for people to know about this before it is too late. Thank you.”  Emilie Strauss, Speaker of the Board, Elgin Community College

“Hello Ms. Whitman!
I just wanted to write you and tell you that you did an excellent job speaking for my class this morning at FCCJ South Campus on Thursday. You taught me some important warning signs of suicide. My mother and a high-school friend gave off some of those warning signs. My mother, for instance, would always say "I'd be better of dead" and things of that nature. Thank god, my father and I got her the help she needed and now is in a pretty good emotional state, therefore we are ALL happy. My friend from high school, wrote me a note after an argument we had, and told me she wanted to kill herself. I showed the family counselor the note, and she had said that typically a person wouldn't say the things she said in the letter (I forgot much of what the letter said now because it was a few years ago.) My counselor said that i shouldn't worry about it too much, but keep an eye on her. She said that I should tell a school counselor if things persist. She was a cutter also, and said that it helps take away her "pain". Still knowing my friend now, i believe she has stopped cutting and has gotten her life in a better state now. She is more happier...and so am I.

Well, I hope you come back to Jacksonville again so I may attend another one of your seminars! Keep up the good work.” Steven Corwin, Student FCCJ South Campus

"I had a friend that was thinking about committing suicide and I said some of those things to her that are on the Don't List of what to say if your friend is suicidal. I am grateful nothing happened because of my mistake. I am also grateful that I now know what to do in case it happens again." Sara Jacobs, Student, Central Methodist University

"You are so inspirational. You are making people aware that suicide exists and saving people's lives. You are helping others by letting them know how to get help to prevent them from committing suicide." Mary, Student, DMACC (Urban)

"This is an important subject that needs to be brought out in the open. Christy does that with her sincerity and honesty. Reach out and touch someone." Vanita Bries, Student, NICC

"Suicide has never been a subject that I've thought about much, but Christy's speech really touched my heart. It was very heartfelt and opened my eyes. Thanks for inspiring to help those that need it. Amy Tentiger, Student, St. Ambrose University

"You have such a way to connect with the audience and show them the true meaning of caring. People may laugh and joke around with serious issues, but you bring amazing points during your presentation that suicide is not a laughing matter." Lacy Putnam, Student, Clinton Community College

“Thank you very much. Your talk touched my heart and spirit. Loving one self is hard, but very essential to self-growth and prosperity. Thanks for making this a dedicated part of your life.”  Trenetia Young, Vice-President, McKendree University CAB

“Christy’s talk had a lot of effects for me personally. I have a family member who committed suicide. I have also had friends who have struggled with it. I have too. The little card with warning signs and the Do’s and Don’ts should be very helpful and I am glad she spoke to us today.”  Amanda, College Programming Board, Elgin Community College .

“Christy’s talk was very informative, well-structured, and touched my heart.”  Torrence Douglas, Student, Western Kentucky University .

“My best friend at school has attempted suicide multiple times. She is here now and alive, but that doesn’t mean it is over. Thank you for joining my journey and struggle to keep her with me each and every day. You’ve changed my life (and hopefully hers) and you might never have known it. Keep going. Your passion makes you AMAZING!”  Chelsea Burhoff, Student, Bucknell University

“I used to think about suicide a couple of years ago and the thing that helped me was my friends and I thinking of good times. I mean I went as far as cutting myself. You reminded me why I am so open to my friends and listen to anyone that comes to me.” Andrew Mikolinarz, Treasure, SUNY Maritime
