The key to improving any area of your life is first, understanding how energy flows, and second, learning to align with and cooperate with that flow.
Mastering our energy is nothing more than being in a state of flow with the very energy stream that creates worlds. The same flow of energy that keeps our solar system in balance also moves through us and from us. When we’re in balance with that flow, we feel happy, content, and at peace. We are in a state of open receptivity to life’s abundance, which means that opportunities and solutions come easily. And when we’re out of balance, we experience struggle and lack.
There are three dimensions of energy alignment – body, breath, and mind.
Mastery of our own energy is a state of inner alignment between body, breath, and mind. And when these three dimensions of our being are in synch, we are continually renewed and recharged. We’re able to recognize possibilities not accessible to us when we’re in fight or flight mode, or in a mindset of scarcity.
From a state of energetic alignment, we understand that all of creation occurs in cycles of expansion and contraction: the tides rise, then recede. Flowers open up in the daylight and close at night. There are periods of rain and periods of drought. We easily accept these natural ebbs and flows as part of our earth’s environment. But when it comes to the ebbs and flows of our own lives, we’re often fearful and resistant.
When our mental energies are out of balance, fear-based and lack-based thoughts invade our minds. And if we identify with – rather than objectively observe – these thoughts, we can mistake our interpretations for reality.
Our mind’s job, above all else, is to ensure our survival. It’s trained to weigh the pros and cons, risks and consequences of every situation. Fearful thoughts trigger a cascade of stress hormones throughout our body. And as we shift into survival mode, our vision contracts, our breath becomes shallow, and we lose access to the resources that are all around us. The mind is an amazing tool, but we have to remember it was never designed to be our master.
When mind, breath and body are all in synch, we feel whole, powerful, and complete. But if even one of these essential aspects of us is out of synch, we feel something missing, we feel unsatisfied. We may feel that we’re not good enough, that we are not blessed. And then we go about trying to change the outer conditions of our lives in order to feel better. But it’s only ever our inner world that needs attention. When we restore balance in our inner world, the outer world must follow suit.
The following energy mastery techniques can reverse this downward spiral and realign with your natural state of abundance and wellbeing:
Energy Mastery Technique #1: Reconnect with your breath.
Your breath is the bridge between your physical self and the expanded, non-physical aspect of you. And by consciously deepening your breath, you can quite literally expand your consciousness.
Deep, connected breathing soothes your nervous system, quiets your mind, and allows you to access higher realms of wisdom and insight. Conscious breath is the key to releasing fight or flight hormones, and to activating a sensation of wholeness and wellbeing.
To master the energy of your breath, close your eyes and follow the sensation of your inhale. Feel it filling up your lungs, your belly, your side ribs and your heart. Pause briefly at the top of your inhale, then release your breath with an audible sigh. Continue this until you feel a softening of resistance and a return of mental and physical equilibrium.
Energy Mastery Technique #2: Take a step back in perspective.
Our fight-or-flight survival mode is marked by a narrowing in perspective. Our pupils contract, our breath shallows or stops, and our field of vision is reduced to the most immediate threat. In a state of energetic misalignment, we may perceive a temporary ebb in resources as a sign of permanent shortage or lack.
By taking a step back, we can more easily recognize the cyclical nature of life. Less productive times are opportunities for deeper rest, reflection and refocus. Less abundant times sharpen our sense of what is truly valuable and important. Over time, we learn to trust that things are always in a state of flux. And energy master surfs the high times and the low, knowing that one can’t exist without the other.
Energy Mastery Technique #3: Use the contrast of what you don’t want to align with what you prefer.
Contained within every unwanted situation is the essence of what we would desire instead. By identifying this essence, and consciously inviting in into your energy field, you become a cooperative component to the change you desire.
And so, if your current situation has you struggling, begin to conjure what greater ease would feel like. If resources are tight, allow yourself to recall a time when abundance was free-flowing. When you change your energy about any situation, the situation will change to match your energy. And when you master your energy, you change your reality. This is a universal law.
