Burning Desire

There’s a huge difference between casually wanting something and having a burning desire for it.  And learning how to close this gap is the secret to manifesting what you want.

Desire is one of the most powerful forces in the universe.  Without it, there could be no creation, no invention, no innovation, and no procreation.  Every desire, big or small, summons life force energy through you.  But, there are ways to temper a burning desire to reduce the likelihood of getting burned.

To manifest a burning desire, learn to temper the heat.

The stronger your desire, the more creative energy you summon.  And by energy, I mean inspiration, creativity, resourcefulness, and clarity – everything you’d need to fulfill that desire.

And yet, when it comes to manifesting your desires, there’s a point where too much intensity can work against you.  The key to skillful manifestation is finding that sweet spot between intending and allowing; between effort-ing and allowing; desiring and believing.

Here are the 3 most important questions to ask yourself to speed the manifestation of any burning desire:

Question #1:  Does it feel good to contemplate my burning desire?

How you feel about your desire matters – a lot.

Emotions are not random or meaningless.  In fact, they serve a vitally important role in the manifestation of any desire.

Our emotions act like a finely tuned GPS system.  In every moment, they let us know when we’re moving in the direction of something we deeply desire.  And they also let us know when we’re moving in opposition to it.

Good-feeling emotions like comfort, ease, hopefulness, interest, and anticipation are internal signals that you’re currently aligned with your burning desire.  They indicate that you’re in an allowing, rather than a resistant, state of being.  In this state, ideas and opportunities arise organically.  You’re in the right place at the right time, and your goal unfolds easily and with a sense of grace.

And on the other hand, bad-feeling emotions, such as doubt, frustration, disappointment, and despair are indicators, too.  They let you know that you’re resisting or opposing the manifestation of your burning desire.

There’s a reason why some emotions feel better than others.

Emotions are simply energy in motion, and whether they feel good or bad has only to do with how your energy is moving.   When you believe in your burning desire and in your ability to create it, you feel fantastic. In that state, you’re intrinsically motivated and guided to actions that will yield satisfying results.  But if you doubt that it’s possible or in your ability to achieve it, you’re actually blocking your own desire.

And so, when contemplating something that you really, really desire, do your best to think of it softly and lovingly. Nurture the idea of it with the same positive energy you would offer a dear friend or a child.

And if thinking about your desire causes you to feel restless, dissatisfied, or angsty, think about something else.  Because in that moment, at least, you’re working against yourself.  It’s best to turn your attention to another subject until you regain your balance.  Manifesting your heartfelt desires is like tending a garden.  The quality of the energy you put in dictates the quality of what you harvest.  And your emotions provide a moment-by-moment way to gauge your energy.

Question #2:  Does the manifestation of my burning desire feel overwhelming or out of reach, or like the next logical step?

If your vision is too big to wrap your mind around, or there are too many unknowns, you’ll have a hard time allowing it to manifest into your experience.

Breaking your burning desire down into manageable steps is the secret to manifesting it with simplicity and ease.  Your desire should feel warm and inviting to you; like the next logical step, not some lofty vision that’s out of reach.

When you have a burning desire that feels too big to accomplish, your subconscious mind will block you from perceiving the route to get there.  To get your subconscious on board, your desire must be realistic enough to imagine in detail.  Breaking your burning desire into SMART goals is one of the easiest ways to make them feel more manageable.

Turning your desires into SMART goals.

The acronym SMART stands for specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound.  Taking a few minutes to make sure these characteristics apply to your burning desire will dramatically increase your chances of manifesting it.  As Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. noted, You don’t have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step.”

Question #3:  In what ways do I believe the fulfillment of my burning desire will make me a better person?

Behind every desire – big or small, material or intangible, superficial or deep – is a longing to experience a certain feeling.

Put simply, we don’t want things simply for the sake of having them. We want them because we believe the pursuit of them will change, expand, or evolve us in some meaningful way.

To uncover the inner feelings driving your desire for external things, you need only ask yourself one question:  Why do I want it?   The answer to this question will lead you behind the external condition, to discover the essence of your desire.

To clarify the essence of your burning desire, consider the attributes you believe you will gain once you’ve attained it.

Would manifesting your desire provide evidence that you’re strong?  That you have faith in the universe? That you’re blessed?  Whatever feeling you uncover, you can begin feeling that way now.

Most people believe they first have to achieve the goal before they can feel good about it.  But when you understand the laws of the universe, you realize this approach is backward.

Embrace the essence of your desire now, even before it manifests in full detail in your life.  Celebrate your success in advance, and bask in all the pleasurable feelings that come with it.

Remember, the universe does not know the difference between imagined joy and earned joy. It simply responds to the energy you’re sending out by bringing more of that energy into your life.
