How to Turn Self-Pity into Self-Compassion

How to Turn Self-Pity into Self-Compassion

Self-pity not only feels awful, but it’s one of the most disempowering energy frequencies we can attune ourselves to.  Because when we’re caught in the loop of feeling sorry for ourselves, we deprive ourselves of the ability to create anything better or different.  But once we know how to turn self-pity into self-compassion, we break this negative spiral and can begin pivoting toward what we desire.

It’s no secret that sometimes in life, things just don’t go our way.  A flight gets delayed and we miss an important meeting.  A relationship we value is going through a rough patch.  We suffer a major loss – physically, socially, or financially.

In times like these, when we’re face-to-face with an unwanted reality, we have a critical choice to make.  We can compassionately acknowledge what’s so, and in so doing, set ourselves up to recreate the situation more to our liking.  Or we can spiral into self-pity and continue to attract more of what we don’t want.

Whenever we’re in self-pity, we are negatively attracting.

Consider the huge difference, in vibrational terms, between the energy of self-pity from the energy of self-compassion.   One diminishes our power, creativity, and self-worth, and the other soothes us back into full connection.   When we’re finding fault and beating ourselves up over past mistakes, we’re transmitting a frequency of regret and discontent.  If we’re feeling down in the dumps and defending how it’s out of our control, we’re actually diminishing our power to change the situation.

Feeling sorry for yourself is like listing all of your limitations, over and over, on a chalkboard.  And the more we assert, focus on, and argue for them, the more attraction power they gain.  Self-compassion is like a magic eraser that brings your energy field back to a neutral state.  Choosing self-compassion over self-pity is like pushing a reset button.  And from this place of neutrality, where we have simply accepted what’s so, we can begin to turn our attention toward the future.  We can use the contrast of what we’ve just experienced to clarify what we desire to experience next.

The following energy mastery practices will help you turn self-criticism into self-compassion:

To Turn Self-Pity into Self-Compassion, Watch Your Words.

In this vibrational universe, we humans are like walking, talking energy transmission towers.  In every moment, we are broadcasting a signal that either magnetize or repels the outcomes we most wish to create.  And the words we speak – both to ourselves and aloud – carry energy that reverberates into every aspect of our lives.

Our thoughts run in energy streams and currents that carry us in a particular direction, like water.  Some thought currents drag us down to the depths of hopelessness, while others lift us to broader perspectives and new possibilities.  In other words, by virtue of our thoughts and words, each one of us creates our own downward – or upward – spirals.

So, to turn self-pity into self-compassion, become as picky about the words you speak as you are about the food you eat.  Don’t allow negative thought currents to sweep through your mind and carry you into unpleasant places.  By offering yourself compassion rather than speaking in opposition to what you desire, you diffuse the unwanted momentum.

To turn self-pity into self-compassion, look for the gifts in every situation.

No situation, event, or circumstance is ever without blessings, because every life experience has the potential of serving us in some way.  But, to find them, we have to be willing to actively look for the positive aspects.

Instead of resenting the hefty utility bill, you could just as easily give thanks for the easy access to water and electricity.  Rather than feeling regret about having gained a few pounds, you could choose to appreciate that you’re well provided for.  Likewise, you don’t need to beat yourself up for the time you spent in a relationship that didn’t ultimately work out.  You could instead focus on the clarity you’ve gained and the wisdom you now have as a result of it.

Where you place your focus has everything to do with what you attract.

To turn self-pity into self-compassion, remember that you cannot give away what you yourself don’t have.

We get ourselves into an energy deficit when we try to give away more than we have at any moment in time.  And this is especially true when it comes to giving compassion.  In any situation you find yourself in, remember that by only giving yourself compassion first, will you be in a position to extend it to others.

So, in any relationship dispute, before empathizing with another’s point of view, make sure you’ve connected with your own.  Take some time to settle your mind, connect with your breath, and feel the flow of your own energy.

You turn self-pity into self-compassion by simply being willing to notice what is. Your own attention, directed inward, is like a healing balm that calms your energy and provides access to broader perspectives.

When you tend to your own energy first, you can easily make the shift from self-pity to self-compassion.  And as you do, you bring stability, generosity, and abundance-consciousness into every dimension of your life.

When You Don’t Feel Like Doing Something You Think You “Should” Do: When to Surrender and When to Take Action

Few things are more uncomfortable than the feeling of not wanting to do something you think you “should” do.  It’s so uncomfortable because when we’re in conflict within ourselves, this translates as chaos in our energy fields.

So, how can you know when it’s wisest to move forward into action, and when it’s best to surrender and not to act? These 3 energy mastery practices will help you to decide.

Energy Mastery Practice #1:  Make your internal alignment your first priority.

When we’re energetically aligned with an outcome we want to create, taking action feels amazing.  Think about waking up early on a day you’re leaving for an exotic vacation.  Or receiving a call from a dear friend you’ve been eager to talk with.

You’re pulled to take these actions because your internal energy is aligned with them.  In fact, staying in bed and missing the flight, or not answering the phone call would feel deeply uncomfortable.  Why?  Because the energies of your thoughts, your expectations, and your desires are all flowing in a particular direction.  And acting in opposition to that energy flow never feels good.

Now consider those times in life when you don’t feel like doing something you think you should do.  You know, the chore you dread having to do or the phone call you’ve been putting off.

It may surprise you to learn that the discomfort you feel when you think of taking unwanted actions has nothing to do with the actions themselves.

It has only to do with your internal state of alignment or misalignment in relation to them.

So the first thing to consider when you’re faced with something you don’t want to do is your current state of alignment.   If the action you’re contemplating evokes confusion, overwhelm or resistance, it’s wise not to override or oppose that energy.  Making alignment your top priority means taking the time to release the resistant energy before moving forward.  And this brings us to the next energy mastery practice.

Energy Mastery Practice #2:  Allow yourself to acknowledge and feel your own resistant energy.

Lots of us were taught to move through resistance, rather than to acknowledge or have compassion for it.   Common sayings like “Grin and bear it,” “Suck it up,” or “Feel the fear and do it anyway” attest to this.  But when you move into action while in a state of resistance, your actions rarely yield desirable results.

You might begrudgingly take action on cleaning the garage, but end up breaking something or making even more of a mess.  You can make the phone call even though you’re in a bad mood, but chances are good that the conversation will go sideways.

Remember, the Law of Attraction is responding to your vibration, not to your actions.

When your personal vibration is in chaos, you magnetize more chaos to yourself, no matter how meticulous your actions.

And so, step two in evaluating whether to do something you don’t feel like doing is to check in with your level of resistance.  If contemplating that action brings up doubtful or negative thoughts, acknowledge these.  If you feel tightness in your body or a drop in your mood, notice and embrace these sensations. These fluctuations in your energy field are simply a manifestation of misalignment, and by welcoming these sensations you allow them to dissolve and be released.

Use your breath to bring awareness and compassion to any areas of tightness, and simply be with whatever sensations arise.  You’ll discover that it only takes 90 seconds of attention to your discordant thoughts and emotions for this energy to begin to dissipate.

Energy Mastery Practice #3:  Align yourself – in thought, emotion, and energy – with whatever decision you make.

Sometimes, taking the previous two steps will cause a dramatic enough shift in your energy that you authentically feel like taking the previously unwanted action.  If this is the case, commit yourself to that action, and focus yourself on the best possible outcome you hope to create.   At other times, however, your resistance is strong enough that you simply cannot align yourself in that moment with the action.

Whatever your experience, allow it to be okay.  Acknowledge to yourself that there is a time for taking action and a time for surrendering.  Energy ebbs and flows, just like the tides rise and fall.  There is no need to push the river, and no need to force yourself into action when your energy is not aligned.

Just bide your time, be compassionate with yourself, and wait for the inspiration to act to arise.

Going with the flow of inspired action is leveraging universal energy; that’s why it feels more like play than work. In a state of alignment and in the absence of resistance, easily and joyfully get more done with less time and effort.

How to Shift Your Energy When You’re Feeling Competitive

An innocent social media scroll reveals a good friend looking fabulous as she suns herself on an exotic beach.  A co-worker negotiates himself hefty raise, even though you were hired at about the same time.  Your next-door neighbor drives home in the car of your dreams.  Suddenly, your breath becomes shallow, your mood plummets, and you find yourself feeling competitive and jealous.  Here are 3 energy mastery practices you can use to shift your vibration:

Energy Mastery Practice #1: Recognize that competition, jealousy and envy are always a reflection of shortage consciousness.

At its core, feelings of competition arise within us because we’re perceiving a shortage of some resource we’ve deemed important.  It may be a perception that there is not enough money to go around.  Or maybe we perceive that love, admiration or appreciation is in short supply.  Anytime we’re in a mindset of lack, our primitive instincts turn on, convincing us to compete for our share of resources.

Scarcity is an illusion.

The illusion is that there is a finite pile of resources that all of us have to fight for.  But the fact is, we live in an abundant universe that is fully capable of fulfilling our every desire.  Another person’s success has no ability to limit our own.  Likewise, there is no shortage of love, joy, or freedom in this ever-expanding universe.

So the first step to releasing feelings of competition is to recognize what they mean:  You are temporarily holding yourself back from the abundance you desire because you’re focusing on lack.

Energy Mastery Practice #2: Allow feelings of competition, jealousy, and envy to wash through you and from you.

Maybe you’ve heard the saying that “what you resist persists.”  And nowhere does this wisdom apply more than it does in the realm of our emotions.

Pretending you’re not experiencing feelings of competition won’t help you transcend them.  In fact, “faking it ‘til you make it” is a bit like using a happy face sticker to cover an empty gas gauge.  You’re still out of gas, but now you’re denying that reality instead of doing something to change it.

So instead, when you notice feelings of competition or jealousy, give yourself permission to experience your reaction fully.  Breathe into any sensations of tightness or constriction in your body. And take some time to explore the painful thoughts that accompany them.  What you’ll discover is this:  By allowing yourself to feel your emotional reactions fully, they dissipate all on their own.

Energy Mastery Practice #3:  Use the object of your competitive feelings to inspire you toward what you desire.

Regardless of how it seems, our feelings of competition are not the result of someone else’s behavior.  Nor are they proof of a lack of resources.  They are simply an indication that we are focused in opposition to something we desire, and as a result, our personal vibration is in chaos.

Anytime you’re having feelings of competition that are directed at another person, one thing is certain: That person is expressing a reality that you desire for yourself.  But you alone hold the power to choose whether to allow this information to paralyze you – or to inspire you.

With every thought and perspective we hold, we are carving out a very specific path to the next reality that will unfold in our experience.  And when our perspective is one of competition and jealousy, we’re not carving out a road to joy and satisfaction.  Rather, we’re creating more of what we don’t want.  We simply can’t notice the absence of something and simultaneously open ourselves to receiving its presence.

So, the next time you’re experiencing feelings of competition, say to yourself something along the lines of this:

“This person is living an experience that I desire to manifest for myself.  And the tension I feel when I observe this is simply an indication of the strength of my desire.  In this moment, I choose to align all of my energies with the fulfilment of what I want to create. And I thank this person for showing me what’s possible for me.”

And then, do your very best to align your energies with the experience of what you want.

If you desire more love, more health and fitness, more freedom or more success, appreciate the manifestation of these experiences everywhere you encounter them.   Look for any little piece of evidence of your desire made manifest, and invest your attention and energy into fanning the flame of it.  Slowly but surely, your vibration will begin to tip from feeling competition to feeling inspired by the possibilities of your life.

The Gift of Anxiety

When you’re in the middle of an anxious moment, anxiety feels like anything but a gift.  But once you understand what it’s trying to tell you, you’ll appreciate the gift of anxiety and can use it to your benefit.

Anxiety is simply a messenger. And once we receive the message it’s trying to convey, the energy of it naturally releases from our system.

Unfortunately, most of the time, we shoot the messenger.

Most of us do not regard anxiety as a gift.  In fact, we usually resist, it fight against it, and try to get it to go away.  We talk ourselves out of it, distract ourselves from it, or take steps to silence it.  And what happens when we try to resist a sensation that’s arising from within?  Of course, the message keeps getting louder and louder until we finally pay attention.

Understand that anxiety is an indicator, not an actual emotion.

It’s easier to receive the gifts of anxiety when you realize that anxiety is not actually an emotion.  Rather, it’s an indication that there are emotions within us that we haven’t allowed ourselves to feel or express.

Anxiety is like a protective mechanism that temporarily shields us from becoming overwhelmed with deeper emotions, such as anger or sadness.

But to find relief, we have to look below that protective layer to discover the source of what’s really going on.  Once we do, we can benefit from that wisdom and receive the gift of anxiety.

Here are 3 important ways that anxiety arises in order to serve you:

Anxiety Gift #1:  Anxiety gets you to pay attention.

The energy of anxiety is kind of like a fire alarm. It goes off to let you know that some important aspect of you or your life needs attention.

So to receive this gift, you want to really give yourself some time to check in with yourself, rather than brushing the sensation aside.

This is as simple as taking a minute to close your eyes and taking some slow, deep breaths.  Withdraw your attention from your surroundings and tune in with what’s happening in your inner world.

Really try to be curious about the sensations that are moving through you.  And as you notice any areas of tension or constriction, see if you can go deeper than the anxiety. Allow yourself to connect with the underlying emotion it’s calling your attention to.

Anxiety Gift #2:  Anxiety arises to signal a block in your energy.

Emotions are simply energy in motion.  And anxiety is an indication of a block or a repression of that normal flow of emotional energy.  So once you’re present with the underlying emotions that are blocked, grant them permission to exist, instead of pushing the sensation aside.

See if you can accept however you are feeling in the moment, knowing that emotions are nothing more than waves of energy.

Rather than trying to figure out the cause or assign blame for how you’re feeling, shift your attention from your mind to your heart.  Feel your connection to All That Is, to the life force energy that underlies every living thing. This life force energy creates and sustains all things, and connects you to the universe itself.

Allow your personal energy field to become entrained and aligned with the pure, divine source that sustains you.  And remind yourself that you can’t be focused within this high frequency energy and in a state of discord at the same time.

Anxiety Gift #3:  Anxiety reminds us to focus on what it is we desire, not on what we don’t want.

The final message that anxiety brings us is one of self-empowerment.  Because whenever we’re feeling anxious, one thing is sure:  We’re focusing more on what we don’t want than what we do.

So the next time you’re having an anxious moment, remind yourself that you have the power to deliberately direct your focus.  You can complain about problems or you can envision their solutions. You can focus on what’s missing from your life, or on the areas where you are incredibly abundant.

Remember that energy flows in the direction that our attention goes. So decide on the quality of vibration that you would like to bring into your physical and mental body and put your attention there!  All it takes is for you to place 51% of your attention on what you desire for your entire mood and energy to flip.

You can imagine the energies of joy, expansion, ease, connection, well-being – whatever you are needing in that moment – pouring from your divine source into you. And just feel this frequency soothing and uplifting every dimension of your being.

And finally, do something nice for yourself that anchors this new frequency into your energy body in a concrete way. Take a hot bath, go for a walk in nature, watch a funny movie, pet your dog or cat.  Stretch out for a few minutes, or take some time to think about something pleasant that you’re looking forward to.

Remember that you are the one who sets the energetic tone for your life, and you can choose whatever energy you desire.  Every time anxiety arises within you, just know that it’s pointing you back toward this truth.

Perspective Is Everything

When it comes to your happiness and abundance in life, perspective is absolutely everything.

Why?

Because what you experience as the reality of your daily life is created, by you, from within.  Everything you manifest or don’t manifest in your life flows directly from the way you perceive things.

Our moment-to-moment experience is the direct result of our perception. So, whether we’re feeling inspired or depressed; blessed or burdened, is not the product of the circumstances we find ourselves in.

In reality, our happiness has nothing to do with the behavior of those around us.  But it has everything to do with the way we are choosing to perceive the people and circumstances around us.

When you really understand just how powerful your perspective is, you will never feel like a victim again.  Or, if you do, you’ll very quickly be able to put yourself back into the driver’s seat of your own life.

These 3 principles will help you to embody the universal principle that perspective is everything:

Principle #1: Perception equals reality.

This may sound like a big statement, so let’s break it down.

Your perspective – meaning, the way you choose to look at things – directly impacts every dimension of your being.  It influences your mood, your attitude, your expectations, your beliefs, your thoughts, your emotions, and ultimately, your actions. And of course, your actions determine the results and outcomes you create.

It’s like a domino effect. The last domino to fall represents the results you create or don’t create in your life.  But that whole sequence of events starts with the way you’re perceiving whatever situation you currently find yourself in.

So for example, if you perceive that your co-workers are critical or unaccepting of you, this perception will directly impact your mood.   Depending on how you’re wired, this perception may lead you to feel defensive, defeated, or sad.  Or you might feel indignant, angry, determined to win their approval, or a whole other range of other moods and emotions.

This mood or emotion then influences your thoughts, and your habitual thoughts harden into beliefs.  And all of this affects the actions you take or are too afraid or discouraged to take.

And so, this entire cascade of reactions – what we call the process of creation – begins with your perception.  Perception is everything because it affects every stage of manifestation that comes after it.

Principle #2:  There are two primary perspectives available in every moment.

As human beings, we are born with the gift of free will.  Which means we can choose to look at life through our human eyes, or through the eyes of the divine.

Our human perspective is often one of limitation, constriction, scarcity, and pessimism.  This is because all of us have had painful or contrasting experiences in our lives that left impressions on us, psychologically and energetically.  And at any moment in time, we can choose to view our present reality through the lens of our past wounding.  And when we do, possibilities shrink, we feel terrible, and the world looks like a hostile place.

But when we choose to view life through the eyes of the universal intelligence that creates and sustains all things, an entirely different picture of reality is revealed.

The divine perspective is always looking for possibilities and solutions.

It sees the opportunities and resources that are always a part of whatever situation we find ourselves in.

When we consciously look through the perspective of the divine, we become a magnet for all cooperative energies, ideas, and resources that can support our greatest joy.

The final principle to help you embrace that perspective is everything is this:

Principle #3: You have the power to choose your perception on purpose.

The circumstances you find yourself in do not have to control the way you feel.  Rather, you have the power to affect your own mood and attitude by deliberately choosing your perspective.

In any moment, you can make the choice to bring into yourself a higher, more hopeful vibration.   You can make an effort to view any situation from a more positive vantage point.  In every moment, you have the power to decide between giving into fear or choosing faith.

A great way of immediately shifting your perspective is to ask yourself, “What would love to have happen in this situation?” or, “What can I find to appreciate about this situation as it exists right now?”

By virtue of the direction of your focus, you’re either nourishing your fears or your desires.

And when you realize you’re more aware of what you don’t want than what you do, deliberately recalibrate your focus.

Engaging the power of your perspective takes a little practice, and it takes a little discipline to not automatically give in to thoughts of lack or scarcity.  But the more you play with shifting your perspective on purpose, the more powerful of a deliberate creator you will know yourself to be.

How Thoughts Create Reality

Thoughts create reality.  This is a universal, metaphysical principle.  Thoughts trigger emotions, which either spur us into action or lull us into inaction.  And, of course, our actions culminate in the outcomes we manifest and don’t manifest in our lives.

Let’s examine the journey of a single thought.

Think back to the last time you caught yourself rehashing an unpleasant situation or reliving an encounter that hurt, disappointed, or annoyed you.  Examining this experience will bring to light two very important things about how thoughts create.

First, the more airtime you give to any thought, the more vivid and detailed it becomes.  And second, the mind cannot tell the difference between a thought about something “real,” and a thought about something remembered or imagined.

The thoughts we think flood our minds with images that have the power to trigger the entire range of our human emotions.  They can lead us on an upward spiral of hopefulness and elation, or a downward spiral of cynicism and despair.  Our thoughts are like seeds, and our minds are like a fertile plot of soil.  In the same way a seed blossoms into a flower or a weed, our thoughts create.  And the quality of what we manifest in our lives is always a reflection of the quality of the thoughts we think.

Thoughts create by generating vibrations.

The fact is, every thought we think, every image we conjure, even every memory we revisit from our past, causes a change in our vibration.  Some thoughts and images cause our vibration to soar, while others cause our vibration to plummet.  You know this from your own personal experience.

Most people give others the credit or the blame for fluctuations in their own personal vibration.  But the fact is, each of us is responsible for our own energetic atmosphere.  After all, we are the only ones with the power to choose our own thoughts.  And we alone choose our own mindset.

You can choose the direction of your thoughts – AKA your mindset – on purpose.

The ability to calibrate or adjust our own mindset is a power that originates 100% from within each one of us.  Yes, it’s true that other people and outer circumstances can and do exert an influence in our lives.  But we are the ones who choose the direction of our thoughts, our perceptions and moods, and – ultimately – the quality of energy that we flow towards our creations.  And from our thoughts and our mindset, everything flows.

Our mindset determines whether we see the proverbial glass as half full or half empty.  It informs whether we think we can or can’t do something.   Our mindset can lure us into a downward spiral where it feels like everything that is going wrong or guide us along an upward spiral of appreciation as we acknowledge all that is going right.   Mindset determines our perspective, our attitudes, our emotions, and – as a result – the outcomes we ultimately create.

The mindset you hold about every important subject in your life is like a personal weather system that you carry with you everywhere you go.

It’s made up of the combined energy of your thoughts, your imaginings, your moods, your expectations, and your beliefs.  But unlike the weather, you have control of the energetic atmosphere in which you live.  And as such, you can choose to reside in the vibration of prosperity, even when others are choosing lack.

You can choose faith, even before there is evidence that warrants it.  You can choose empowerment, even when those around you are marinating in victimhood.  Everything begins with the direction of your thoughts because thoughts create reality.  Exercising this all-important choice is the secret to living your best life, and to manifesting everything that you desire.
