gift of anxiety

When you’re in the middle of an anxious moment, anxiety feels like anything but a gift.  But once you understand what it’s trying to tell you, you’ll appreciate the gift of anxiety and can use it to your benefit.

Anxiety is simply a messenger. And once we receive the message it’s trying to convey, the energy of it naturally releases from our system.

Unfortunately, most of the time, we shoot the messenger.

Most of us do not regard anxiety as a gift.  In fact, we usually resist, it fight against it, and try to get it to go away.  We talk ourselves out of it, distract ourselves from it, or take steps to silence it.  And what happens when we try to resist a sensation that’s arising from within?  Of course, the message keeps getting louder and louder until we finally pay attention.

Understand that anxiety is an indicator, not an actual emotion.

It’s easier to receive the gifts of anxiety when you realize that anxiety is not actually an emotion.  Rather, it’s an indication that there are emotions within us that we haven’t allowed ourselves to feel or express.

Anxiety is like a protective mechanism that temporarily shields us from becoming overwhelmed with deeper emotions, such as anger or sadness.

But to find relief, we have to look below that protective layer to discover the source of what’s really going on.  Once we do, we can benefit from that wisdom and receive the gift of anxiety.

Here are 3 important ways that anxiety arises in order to serve you:

Anxiety Gift #1:  Anxiety gets you to pay attention.

The energy of anxiety is kind of like a fire alarm. It goes off to let you know that some important aspect of you or your life needs attention.

So to receive this gift, you want to really give yourself some time to check in with yourself, rather than brushing the sensation aside.

This is as simple as taking a minute to close your eyes and taking some slow, deep breaths.  Withdraw your attention from your surroundings and tune in with what’s happening in your inner world.

Really try to be curious about the sensations that are moving through you.  And as you notice any areas of tension or constriction, see if you can go deeper than the anxiety. Allow yourself to connect with the underlying emotion it’s calling your attention to.

Anxiety Gift #2:  Anxiety arises to signal a block in your energy.

Emotions are simply energy in motion.  And anxiety is an indication of a block or a repression of that normal flow of emotional energy.  So once you’re present with the underlying emotions that are blocked, grant them permission to exist, instead of pushing the sensation aside.

See if you can accept however you are feeling in the moment, knowing that emotions are nothing more than waves of energy.

Rather than trying to figure out the cause or assign blame for how you’re feeling, shift your attention from your mind to your heart.  Feel your connection to All That Is, to the life force energy that underlies every living thing. This life force energy creates and sustains all things, and connects you to the universe itself.

Allow your personal energy field to become entrained and aligned with the pure, divine source that sustains you.  And remind yourself that you can’t be focused within this high frequency energy and in a state of discord at the same time.

Anxiety Gift #3:  Anxiety reminds us to focus on what it is we desire, not on what we don’t want.

The final message that anxiety brings us is one of self-empowerment.  Because whenever we’re feeling anxious, one thing is sure:  We’re focusing more on what we don’t want than what we do.

So the next time you’re having an anxious moment, remind yourself that you have the power to deliberately direct your focus.  You can complain about problems or you can envision their solutions. You can focus on what’s missing from your life, or on the areas where you are incredibly abundant.

Remember that energy flows in the direction that our attention goes. So decide on the quality of vibration that you would like to bring into your physical and mental body and put your attention there!  All it takes is for you to place 51% of your attention on what you desire for your entire mood and energy to flip.

You can imagine the energies of joy, expansion, ease, connection, well-being – whatever you are needing in that moment – pouring from your divine source into you. And just feel this frequency soothing and uplifting every dimension of your being.

And finally, do something nice for yourself that anchors this new frequency into your energy body in a concrete way. Take a hot bath, go for a walk in nature, watch a funny movie, pet your dog or cat.  Stretch out for a few minutes, or take some time to think about something pleasant that you’re looking forward to.

Remember that you are the one who sets the energetic tone for your life, and you can choose whatever energy you desire.  Every time anxiety arises within you, just know that it’s pointing you back toward this truth.
